Honestly, i can't recommend a single place in the northeast that would be nice to visit in january (or february, or march, or april) unless you're super into skiing or something. Yes, tofino is awesome in january during storm season, it's actually my preferred time to visit Surfing is really good, it's cold but totally fine with a wetsuit, it's great for hanging out on a beach watching the storms roll in, or curling up with a book and cup of tea while it pours rain and feel cozy and relaxed.
